Residents looking to give back to their community are being invited to explore dozens of volunteering opportunities at an event in Bath this autumn.

B&NES 3SG is bringing together around 50 charities, community groups and third sector organisations for its Volunteer Fair at Bath Abbey on Thursday 22nd October, offering visitors the chance to meet local organisations face-to-face, find out about volunteering roles and discover how they can make a difference across Bath and North East Somerset.

The fair is aimed at anyone interested in volunteering, whether they can spare a few hours a month or are looking for a more regular commitment. Opportunities are expected to span a wide range of causes, including health, wellbeing, environmental projects, heritage, youth work, advice services and community support.

As well as helping local organisations, volunteering can bring a range of personal benefits. Research has shown that volunteering can improve wellbeing, reduce feelings of loneliness, build confidence and provide opportunities to develop new skills and experience.

The event comes at a time when many charities and community groups are facing increased demand for their services while volunteering levels have declined in recent years, leaving many organisations looking for additional support.

Visitors can browse the exhibition at their own pace, speak directly with charity representatives and current volunteers, and gather information about opportunities that match their interests and availability. There is no obligation to sign up on the day.

Alongside the exhibition, a programme of free 45-minute talks and workshops will run throughout the event.

Sessions aimed at prospective and current volunteers will explore topics including skills-based volunteering, overcoming barriers to volunteering, personal development and employability, and flexible volunteering opportunities that support wellbeing.

Additional sessions for volunteer managers and charity staff will cover volunteer recruitment, engagement, inclusive programmes, collaboration and demonstrating impact.

Refreshments will also be available throughout the day, with a local coffee and cake vendor on site inside the Abbey.

A spokesperson for 3SG said, “Whether you are a student, retired, working full-time, looking for work, leading a corporate volunteering programme or simply curious about local community groups, the Volunteer Fair is a great opportunity to discover the difference volunteering can make, both to your community and to your own wellbeing.”

Entry is free and visitors can attend at any point between 11am and 3pm on Thursday 22nd October at Bath Abbey.
