The Innovation Award category at this year’s TBE Awards, sponsored by Thrings, is being championed by Business West.

As one of the largest Chambers of Commerce in the UK, Business West represents thousands of employers and entrepreneurs across the South West. Its purpose is to help businesses start, grow, and thrive, strengthening the regional economy and supporting prosperity for everyone.

We spoke to Head of Skills Matt Tudge to find out more.

Underneath are two square panels: the left shows an orange lightbulb icon, and the right lists finalists in black text: Digital Wonderlab, Forceteck, Theax Technology, Tigerplay. Background is a gradient from light to dark orange.

Can you give us an overview of some of the projects you’re currently undertaking?

At the moment, we’re leading the government’s Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIPs) across four regions, supporting a more responsive, employer-led skills system. Alongside this, we’re driving export growth through our international trade services, helping firms transition towards net zero, and connecting businesses, educators, and innovators through our Futures West Foundation to explore the future of work and technology.

Why did you decide to sponsor a TBE Award category this year?

The Business Exchange Awards are a fantastic celebration of the people and organisations shaping the South West’s future. Sponsoring a category is our way of recognising and amplifying that spirit of innovation, creativity and ambition that defines our region.

What was it about the category you’re sponsoring that appealed to you?

We’re delighted to be sponsoring the Innovation Award, with one of our Innovation and Growth Specialists from our Innovate UK Business Growth programme and Innovation team joining the judging panel. Innovation sits right at the heart of what we do – helping businesses to turn great ideas into commercial success.

The South West is home to some of the UK’s most exciting innovators, from cutting-edge manufacturers and creative tech firms to pioneering sustainability start-ups.

How important is regional recognition like TBE Awards for businesses and organisations?

Regional recognition really matters – the South West is full of businesses doing world-class work, but often without the spotlight they deserve. Awards like these help raise visibility and inspire collaboration

Are there other categories you’ll be keeping a close eye on?

We’ll certainly be watching the sustainability and people development awards. The most successful innovations come from talented people working with purpose, and it’s always inspiring to see businesses leading the way in those areas too.

What are you looking forward to about Awards night?

Celebrating the best of the South West! The TBE Awards night is a brilliant reminder of how much creativity and collaboration there is across our business community. We’re looking forward to hearing the stories behind the achievements – and meeting the people who are helping shape the region’s future.

Anything else you’d like to add?

We’re a friendly bunch, so make sure you come and say hello on the night!
