The 2025 TBE Awards, sponsored by Thrings, take place in two weeks’ time, and in the run-up we have been chatting to some of our finalists about their nominations.

Managing Partner at BLB Solicitors, Catherine Smith, has been nominated in the Leader of the Year category sponsored by Bath Clinic and The Ridgeway Hospital.

Catherine began her career in the NHS before retraining in law, bringing a unique blend of analytical thinking, people-focused leadership and commercial strategy to her role. With nearly 20 years of experience in family law, Catherine has spent the last four years leading the firm, driving profit growth, strengthening the brand and shaping a clear strategic vision for the future. She is deeply committed to fairness, integrity and fostering an environment where both colleagues and clients can thrive.

We asked Catherine about TBE Awards and her nomination.

Why did you enter the 2025 TBE Awards?

I didn’t actually enter myself – my colleagues nominated me, which makes this recognition even more meaningful. It was a lovely surprise, and it says a lot about the trust and support we’ve built as a team. I see leadership as something you do alongside others, not above them, so the fact that this came from the people I work with every day makes it very special. Leadership can be intense and all-consuming, and it’s easy to move straight on to the next challenge without stopping to celebrate. The TBE Awards feels like the right place to share our story, connect with other business leaders, and shine a light on what’s possible when you combine commercial focus with genuine care for people.

What achievement are you most proud of in the past 12 months?

This year has been about growth with purpose. I’m proud of significantly increasing the firm’s profit while building solid foundations for the future – from financial planning to recruitment, training and brand development. Leading through this period has required a mix of strategy, resilience and a lot of problem-solving, but seeing the business flourish, and the team thrive, has made it all worth it. I’m especially proud that we’ve done it without losing the culture and values that make the firm what it is.

What does being a finalist in the TBE Awards mean to you / your team?

It honestly means a lot. For the team, it’s external recognition of the hard work and heart they put in every day. For me, it’s a reminder that leadership isn’t about titles – it’s about lifting others up, creating opportunities, and driving something bigger than yourself. It’s lovely to see that reflected back through this nomination.

What’s next for you – any exciting plans or goals on the horizon?

We’re at a really exciting point. The focus now is on strategic expansion: growing our services, attracting and developing talented people, and deepening our presence in the region. I’m also passionate about developing future leaders within the firm, so we build something that lasts. On a personal level, I want to keep pushing myself – refining how we work, spotting opportunities, and making sure we keep our energy and purpose at the heart of everything we do.

If you win, how will you celebrate?

With the team, without question. Success is never a solo achievement – it’s shared. I’ll bring everyone together to properly celebrate, reflect on what we’ve achieved, and enjoy the moment before we get stuck into the next chapter.
